Firearms control: deadline for submissions extended

By Joe Dimbleby
Thursday, 02 September 2010

Shooting community crashes Westminster computers as deadline for firearms control submissions is extended.

After being “swamped” with evidence from the shooting community, the Home Affairs Select Committee on firearms control is prompted to extend the deadline for submissions.

The Committee on firearms control experienced such a large volume of emails from members of the shooting community, submitting evidence to the current inquiry, that its computers crashed last week.

On the day of the deadline, last Friday 27 August, such was the volume of submissions from shooters seeking to put the case for legitimate shooting sports to MPs on the committee, that the office is still attempting to clear the backlog. The clerk of the committee, Elizabeth Flood, has asked those who are unsure whether their submission got through to resend them.

She told Shooting Times magazine: “We don’t normally receive so many emails from individuals. We were, for want of a better word, swamped. Unless people received an email notice from us apologising and acknowledging receipt of their submission, they should resend it but please put a note to say you have sent it twice so we avoid duplication.”

The clerk confirmed that by the end of July the Committee had already received more than 300 submissions, the most since the 2008 HASC inquiry into domestic violence. Evidence for the firearms control committee looks set to break that record with hundreds more coming in on the day of the deadline itself.

The average number of submissions to a Select Committee inquiry is about 40.

As a result of the huge volume of emailed evidence, Elizabeth Flood explained that the deadline would be extended: “The 27th was an administrative deadline. People are welcome to submit evidence throughout the inquiry, which will go on into October. It is wise to get it in as early as you can, however. We will collate the evidence as it comes in and present it to MPs who will begin to look at it when they return to Parliament after the party conferences end around October 11.”

BASC’s Simon Clarke said: “The overwhelming level of responses sent in to the Home Affairs Select Committee matches our experience of replies copied to BASC and we believe it is a reflection of the seriousness with which everyone who shoots is treating this inquiry. Given the apparent failure in the email systems used to collect responses, it is right that the Committee will consider evidence sent in after the initial deadline. Anyone who has not yet taken the time to send in a response should do so quickly and a guide to submitting evidence can be found on the BASC website.”

Competition .22 Pistol shooting has returned to the UK

August 23rd, 2010 Ian Posted in Gun Law, Pistol Shooting, Shooting 4 Comments »

It looks like .22 pistol shooting has returned to the main land of the United Kingdom, and about time too.

Just a couple of questions, why are the shooting organisations not shouting this from the roof tops it is a very big victory and the second question that may have an impact on the first question how can I get one for club competition?

It is a pity to read about this in “This is Exeter” rather than the NRA or NSRA websites or journals but please read the report and enjoy.

London 2012 Olympics hopeful Geikie allowed to shoot in UK

FOR the first time in 12 years Gorgs Geikie has been allowed to shoot in the UK — and she insists it couldn’t be better timed with London 2012 just two years away.

British laws forced the 25-year-old from Okehampton to eat, sleep and breathe shooting abroad, with the 1997 Firearms Act banning the use of .22 calibre handguns in the UK.

To make matters worse for Geikie, her discipline is not recognised in Britain and therefore she receives no financial support and must fund her every move herself.

However, in a radical move, the former Okehampton College pupil and her British teammates have been given limited access to shoot at ranges in Bisley and Bedford this year.

And Geikie, who had a disappointing time at the recent World Championships in Munich, admitted the decision could prove vital with October’s Commonwealth Games next on the road to the London 2012 Olympics. “With 2012 coming up, a small group of us on the British team have been able to get access to our guns, but we are still very restricted,” said Geikie, who won bronze in the 10m air pistol at the 2006 Commonwealths in Melbourne.

“We can only shoot them in Bisley and Bedford and, apart from that, you can’t shoot a live shot at all and the security at those ranges is very heavy.

“But the facilities are good — perhaps not as good as they could be — but this is the first six months in 12 years that we have been able to bring guns back to the country.

“You’ve got to start somewhere and having access to the guns again can only benefit us in the run-up to 2012, especially with the Commonwealths coming up.

“Having the freedom to hold on to them every day, not necessarily shooting them, but we now have the ability to train with them, which we call dry firing — we squeeze the trigger but no shot is fired.”

Geikie made the trip from Okehampton to London last month for a behind the scenes tour of the Olympic Park, coinciding with the two years to go to 2012 anniversary.

And Geikie is adamant her London 2012 dream is firmly on track.

“I visited the park for the first time on the day it was officially two years to go until 2012. It was a bit of a mammoth journey but it was worth it,” she said.

“And I feel like I am where I need to be. I have my training planned out leading all the way up to the Games, so I am definitely on the right track to get to London.

“I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I do think about going and winning a medal. You’ve got to aim for the top — there is no point in aiming for second.”

Visa is proud to be Presenting Partner of Team 2012, a team of 1,200 athletes across the UK who are aiming to compete at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. For more information log on to www.lifeflowsbetter.com.

Home Affairs Committee firearms review

August 4th, 2010 Ian Posted in Politics, Shooting 2 Comments »

Home Affairs Committee logo

Home Affairs Committee logo

So the shooters of the UK have only a few days remaining to submit any ideas they have to the Home Affairs Committee firearms review.

It has been reported in the last couple of days who is charging the committee and it is Labour’s Keith Vaz, and after looking at his voting record I think that the shooting world has an uphill struggle. It is important that not only our national organisations put up a good showing but that we as shooters show our support for our sport / pastime and or life style.

As normal BASC have been leading from the front and have asked for a mass response to this from the shooting world and they have even produced a crib sheet for shooters to refer too.

It is everyone’s responsibility to respond to this request and please do not think that someone else will do it because they will not do it.

So read up on your sport and subject get your submission in stand up and be counted.

For those of you who want to keep politics out of shooting, I am sorry to say that you can not avoid it it is well and truly in the realm of politics please get involved and try to do the best for the sport.

Today’s requirements

June 14th, 2010 Ian Posted in Gun Law, Shooting No Comments »

The Prime Minister states that the Home Office will look at current gun laws to ensure they meet today’s requirements. (Shooting times)

Since the horrific events in Cumbria some people have been pushing for a review of the laws around the licensing of firearms and at looks as if this review will go forward, it is nice to see a level of maturity entering the review from the start. There has yet to be ant knee jerk reactions with politicians of all colours saying we should wait for the police review.

This could be a real chance to look at the licensing laws in this country had have the debate that was lacking in the late 90’s. This could be a chance to simplify the law’s and clear up some of the poorly drafted legislation that is so often rushed in.

Perhaps with a real debate both inside and outside the shooting world we can show non shooters just why the sport is so interesting and why shooting should remain a sport that everyone can participate in.

Growth in shotgun and firearms ownership

April 22nd, 2010 Ian Posted in Shooting No Comments »

This is a good news story for the shooting world; there is a genuine growth in the sport for both shotguns & firearms.

It would be nice if the NRA or one of the other shooting organisations was able to harness this increase in number to push the legitimate sport of shooting out of the kneejerk politics that we have in the UK at the moment.

It would be nice to see the shooting world get together and stand united, BASC once talked about “One Voice” that idea looks to have fizzled out but perhaps with an increase of new blood in the sport we can have the one voice we so badly need.

Strong growth in shotgun and firearms ownership

A record number of firearms certificates and a rise in shotgun ownership reflects shooting’s growing popularity

There has been a strong surge in new shotgun and firearm certificates issued by the police in England and Wales, according to analysis of the latest figures published last month.

Well this morning I went IPAS shooting with Little Miss English Shooter, her first time out and she loved it. It is a little more fun and exciting that standard target rifle shooting.

She now wants to go more often and I get the feeling that she will want a pink CO2 gun, any ideas where I can get one!!

For more information on IPAS take a look at the IPAS website.

Fantastic introduction to shooting from the police

December 9th, 2009 On The Road Posted in Comment, Shooting No Comments »

Sadly this document is not from the police in the UK  but the police in New Zealand.

We are used to the police in the UK putting out advice like this to parents

03May2007-sp

The New Zealand police have a very different approach in the Arms Code they say:

Special message to parents

Some parents worry when their child expresses an interest in airguns. But, owning an airgun and using it under your supervision can be a positive step in developing safe firearm routines.

An air rifle is preferable to an air pistol. It is an ideal first gun which a young person can learn to handle responsibly and safely.

The NZMSC offers a free firearm safety lecture. Contact your local Police Arms Officer for details.

This is a direct quote from thair Arms Code booklet that can be downloaded from this site  New Zealand Arms Code or be going to the www.police.govt.nz website and searching for it.

It is one of the best introductions to shooting & safety that I have read and if anyone has friends interested in shooting I would print off a copy to them and give it to them.

The emphases on education & safety from the New Zealand police is far more impressive and I would hazzard a guess at more effective that the stance taken by the UK police even this month they are telling parents in Essex not to buy toy guns for Christmas.

FAC / SGC, The BMA and your local Firearms police officer.

August 26th, 2009 Ian Posted in Comment, Shooting 3 Comments »

Feeling a little under the weather and want to pop to the doctors for a little pick me up, watch out for your FAC or SGC.

According the the BBC it looks like the BMA are going to change their guidelines on firearms.

The BMA’s plan to “tag” – or highlight – the medical records of patients who have shotgun or firearms licences and if you pop into the doctors they will then let the police know that you are feeling a little down and then well anything could happen.

In reality this will mean that no FAC or SGC holder will do to the doctors if they are feeling a little down as they will fear that their permission to enjoy a sport will be revoked, if this is the case then the ones with very mild symptoms will not be treated OK top be honest I think many people could do with understanding that life sometimes causes problems you need to work through them as it is better than popping pills and people who need real treatment will be missed.

This is an ill thought out idea after all you can not get your FAC or SGC without giving the police full access to your medical records so it is nothing new as far as I can tell but the idea of placing a “tag” on you medical records smacks of something else I just cant put my finger on what it’s called.

Sex and drugs and rock and roll

June 4th, 2009 Ian Posted in Comment, Shooting, Spin No Comments »

So what do shooting clubs, prostitution, sexual services, obscene and restricted material have in common?

According to the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice guidelines quite a bit.

If you pop over to to the PSA website you will see that shooting clubs are in with the company of the aforementioned they also point out that you might wish to give your opinions (politely) to the BCAP Questions 55 & 56 – At BCAP consultation. They are happy to receive responses to the consultation by e-mail, but you will need to include their cover sheet which is in Word format. Their e-mail address for responses is BCAPcodereview@cap.org.uk .

I will be and I suggest you do the same.

The Conservatives and Pistol Shooting

May 29th, 2009 Ian Posted in Civil liberties, Gun Law, Shooting 4 Comments »

The Conservative party have published a document on the web called EXTENDING OPPORTUNITIES A CONSERVATIVE POLICY PAPER ON SPORT.

This PDF file can can find it at: EXTENDING OPPORTUNITIES: A CONSERVATIVE POLICY PAPER ON SPORT

The bit I like is on page 8 where it says the Conservatives would:

Amend firearms legislation to ensure the UK target pistol shooters can train and compete in this country. This will end the absurd situation where we use public money to support athletes to train abroad in an activity banned in this country.

In the last couple of weeks the The Liberal Democrats have come out in support for the The Sportsman’s Association calls for the 2012 games location and now this.

Could we be seeing the beginning of a change of attitudes?

Please give this yound lady your vote

May 27th, 2009 Ian Posted in Shooting 1 Comment »

I put this on my Twitter feed last night and have only just got around to the blog.

Georgina in the British Airways Great Britons vote, please visit http://www.greatbritons.ba.com/users/357 and add your vote, she is a lady pistol shooter hoping to shooting in 2012, it is nice to see the judges noteing the legal restrictions.

This is from the site.

Why the judges were impressed

The legal and funding restrictions around Georgina’s training have added some significant hurdles in her ambition for success in 2012. Having re-applied for Great Britons she has shown she will not take no for answer and flights could make all the difference.

——————————————————————————–

I am the British number one Lady Pistol Shooter and I want a London 2012 Olympic medal. This is an awesome challenge in itself, but I have further difficulties to contend with.

One of the two Olympic events I compete in uses a .22 Pistol which is currently banned in the UK since Dunblane 1996. Therefore we are forced to not only compete, but train abroad too. This is task that British Shooters have had to contend with for the past 12 years and but has now been heightened further more due to the recent UK Sport funding in January. British Shooting was hit hard, with an 80% CUT in their allocated money for the four year lead up period to London, of what they had for Beijing. Consequently there are no funds to continue sending me abroad to train / compete and I am having to fund myself.

So how can I improve? How can I win an Olympic medal for my country…..in our very own capital City, if I can’t even train? Trying to train Sport Pistol, the .22 Olympic shooting event at home with my Air Pistol is hopeless. The two guns are as different as chalk and cheese. I liken the situation Brisish Shooters are in to tennis. It is like me training with a Badminton racket at home and then going to Wimbledon and competing with a tennis racket……against Roger Federer!

Winning Great Britons would enable me to travel abroad to train and compete and help me stand on a more equal playing field with my fellow competitors. But more importantly be the lifeline to make my Olympic dream become reality.
