Resurrect The Sport: Understand the facts about gun crime in the United Kingdom.

Gun crime in the United Kingdom is on the increase this is a fact that cannot be disputed by any side of the argument.

People will tell you that the banning of handguns will stop the illegal use of them, this is not true. This is not just a statement by me being pro gun ownership but a statement of the facts and figures that are produced from the British Crime Survey.

This graph was taken from the BBC news website is and used to illustrate the point.

This is the climb in gun crime since the banning of handguns. Please note that the graph you see is not including air weapons

To stop people saying that you have been selective in your dates I will include this graph as well.

This shows the climb since 1982, you can see that the offences began to sky rocket around 1989/1999 about the time of the ban.

It may be reasonable to ask why when handguns are banned how & why are the crimes involved with this kind of firearm going up?

One thing I can tell you is that before the ban there was 50,000 FAC holders with pistols (many had more than 2-3 pistols under their ownership) in their homes for sports use, if we where all such dangers to society you would expect the number of gun related offences to fall after the ban.

As you can see from the governments own statistics this has not been the case.

The government is saying that the rate of increase gun crime is in decline. This is a very clever way of making people feel like things are getting better. This statement masks the fact that gun crime is growing year on year.

The math works like this:

Year 1 50% increase in gun crime on the previous year.
Year 2 10% increase in gun crime on the previous year.
Year 3 7% increase in gun crime on the previous year.
Year 4 20% increase in gun crime on the previous year.
Year 5 3% increase in gun crime on the previous year.
Year 6 3% increase in gun crime on the previous year.
Year 7 5% increase in gun crime on the previous year.

As you can see the number of gun crimes each year is going up but the rate of increase is going down from 50% to 5%.

This is not a victory of gun control as the numbers are increasing year on year but the government can say that the rate of increase is in decline.
